(WBBM NEWSRADIO) —Talks are taking place this weekend between the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Public Schools administration following three days of cancelled classes and uncertainty about whether they’ll resume on Monday.

While both sides accuse each other of labor violations, talks are expected to continue through the weekend and Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the issue has to be resolved.

The teachers have been here before and their demands are the same.

"What we're asking is not too much", said Briana Hambright-Hall, a member of the union.

"All we're saying is we would like our students to test negative before entering the building. A two-week halt is not too much considering that charter schools, neighborhood suburban areas, Catholic schools are all doing it."

Another member Tennile Evans said teachers have asked for PPE, more testing, and better safety measures.

"We've been fighting for resources for months," she said. "It has come down to a work action-not a work stoppage. Not a strike...a work action."

“CPS is committed to working toward an agreement throughout the weekend, and we are dedicated to working day and night so we can get our students back to school next week, hopefully on Monday," said a statement from the administration.

It remains a fluid situation.
