CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A new study from the University of Illinois-Chicago found wearing a face mask is uncomfortable for people with asthma.
Dr. Sharmilee Nyenhuis is an associate professor at UIC Medicine and one of the authors of the study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology that surveyed 500 adults with asthma across the us.
“Three-quarters of them did experience some trouble breathing or shortness of breath at least a little of the time while wearing the mask,” Nyenhuis told WBBM Newsradio.
Those who didn’t have their asthma under control were more likely to have problems wearing a mask. Nyenhuis said the suggestions they offered could be helpful to people who don’t have pulmonary issues.
“Taking mask breaks or making sure that you’re finding a comfortable-fitting mask,” Nyenhuis siad.
Two percent of those surveyed found their symptoms improved with a mask on, something she attributes to the additional protection it provides against pollen or other asthma triggers.
