(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A northwestern suburb is concerned about the potential for rabbit-hoarding, and village officials weighed restrictions earlier this week.

Hoffman Estates trustees worry they might wind up dealing with a situation like one in Schaumburg three years ago, when dozens of rabbits were rescued from a hotel.

Janet Star, owner of Petland, said most bunnies sold by her store don’t go to Hoffman Estates residents.

Star said she’d put microchips in bunnies if village trustees wanted, but Toni Greetis of rabbit rescue Red Door Chicago said microchipping wouldn’t help.

Consumers dump domestic rabbits out into the elements when they realize they can’t handle them as they get a few months old and become more aggressive, Greetis said.

“Rabbits are impulsively purchased by consumers,” she said.

In the end, Hoffman Estates village trustees opted not to establish any new rules or ordinances regarding rabbit sales.
