Suburban ski resort rejoices at snowstorm forecast

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Snow might not be your favorite thing to deal with, but if you like skiing or snowboarding it’s always good news when it arrives.

“I think I'm one of the only people of my friends who loves snow and cheers for it,” said Mike Toohey, superintendent of Villa Olivia Ski Club in west suburban Bartlett.

The ski resort has been making snow around the clock, but Toohey told WBBM Newsradio natural snow helps extend the season and brings a boost in business.

“When [people] walk out their front yard or backyard and they see snow, they think of skiing, they think of tubing, they think of snowboarding, they think of us,” he said. “So it's the visual that's perfect marketing for us.”

Not only does more snow mean more skiers, it also saves the Bartlett Park District money.

“The snow-making guns are fairly expensive and then manpower,” said Toohey. “I have to have a crew of two staff at all times, 24 hours a day. So that adds up with the manpower and the cost of the equipment.”

Toohey says he’s looking forward to skiers hitting the slopes later this week.

Villa Olivia is open Thursdays through Sundays.
