Supposedly haunted west suburban home draws unwelcome guests

NAPERVILLE, Ill (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A west suburban couple is pleading for privacy as their supposedly haunted house is drawing unwelcome guests.

Linda Geib and her husband, Klaus, bought a home in historic downtown Naperville last August. It was built in 1870, and the previous owners warned them it was a stop on two local ghost tours.

“Every Saturday night, we have one ghost tour that comes along the side of our house on Van Buren with their theory of what happened, where somebody was trying to be raised from the dead,” Linda Geib told Naperville City Council members.  “On the other side, we have another ghost tour that comes with their theory that it was actually in our kitchen where a son had tried to revive his wife after digging her up from the Naperville Cemetery.”

Geib was under the impression the ghost tours would only take place around Halloween. But this year, the tours started in June, and she said it’s gotten out of hand.

“Sometimes I'd have 40 people in our yard; 20 on one side, 20 in the front, all peering into the house,” Geib said. “We've had to pick up garbage and cigarette butts and we've replanted grass I don't know how many times.”

The couple tried to reach an agreement with ghost tour companies, but said the groups keep getting bigger and bigger, which is why they turned to City Council for a solution.

Councilwoman Patti Gustin suggested the city look into permits, police patrols, or banning the ghost tours all together. Others suggested the couple place ‘no trespassing’ signs in their yard.

“The first time they come onto the property, you can actually call the police,” said Councilwoman Jennifer Bruzan Taylor. “Hopefully by the time the police come maybe one or two times to your house, it would maybe keep you off the ghost tour stop.”
