(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — SWAT team officers descended on a liquor store in Midlothian on Wednesday, as an attempted robbery turned into a tense standoff with police — and three people have been taken into custody.

Midlothian police were called to Emporium Liquor, located near 147th Street and Springfield Avenue, for reports of an armed robbery.

“Upon arrival, an officer saw one subject come outside with proceeds,” said Midlothian Police Chief Daniel Delaney. “Another subject was coming out behind that individual wearing a ski mask.”

Delaney said one of the suspects got into a waiting van and led officers on a chase that ended in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood with an arrest. The other suspect ran back into the store, which was where police learned a third suspect was holding workers and witnesses at gunpoint. A SWAT team was called in to assist.

“After a lengthy, lengthy negotiation, the SWAT operators were able to get both suspects to surrender without incident,” he said. “We’re happy to say that there were no injuries during this entire incident.”

The investigation was still underway, but authorities said the three suspects may be wanted for similar armed robberies in Indiana.
