Chicago's extreme cold could be taking a toll on your tech.

Carl Prouty, Technologist at Abt, tells us batteries will discharge at a faster rate, adding continued exposure to the extreme cold can have a permanent effect.

"It can effect the durability of that battery in the long run," Prouty says. "You may notice if you accidentally leave it in the cold for a few days, it's not going to charge to its natural capacity."

Your car's LCD screens could also malfunction due to the fluid inside freezing, "causing it to be glitchy, causing it to be sluggish, and sometimes it won't work at all until it warms up."

If you do find yourself with cold tech, Prouty suggests letting it warm up to room temperature before turning it on.

"If you bring it from really cold to even room temperature, condensation can happen on those sensitive components inside your machine."

Located in Glenview, Abt is one of the nation’s leading independent electronics and appliance retailers.
