(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Students at a Naperville High School shared their concerns about mental health with the U.S. surgeon general on Monday in the wake of two classmate suicides.

Naperville Congresswoman Lauren Underwood was at Neuqua Valley High school to host a virtual meeting between students there and Cabinet Member Vivek Murthy.

About a dozen students, including Dylan Sedgewick, talked about fighting the stigma of mental health issues and the pressures facing all of them.

Emily Morgan said more students are willing to talk about the pressures they share, but finding the right people to talk to is still a problem.

Annika Teune said she’s open to talk with her peers about her own struggles but feels compelled to remind them, “I'm just a 17-year-old kid,” not an expert.

Murthy said students shouldn’t sell themselves short, based on the insights they shared Monday.

Students said schools need more resources for counsellors and psychologists.
