CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The battle over City Council redistricting seems to be gaining momentum. But an expected showdown Wednesday never materialized.

Aldermen behind the so-called Chicago United Ward Map have been pressing their case all week, getting newly appointed 11th Ward Alderwoman Nicole Lee to support their plan.

“One is stronger than the other, and that’s the Chicago United Map, so if it comes to (a) referendum, that’s the one I’m going to support,” Lee said.

In fact all the map proposals would create the city’s first Asian majority ward to varying degrees. But backers of the so-called People’s Coalition Map including the Council Latino Caucus and the group Change Illinois have been thwarted trying to get their plan on the ballot.

They’re not ruling out a court fight, which troubles Alderman Roderick Sawyer with the Black Caucus.

“I’m hoping that we don’t go to (a) referendum because in all honesty I think going to referendum, we all lose… Some members of the press are making it a us versus them kind of mentality, and that’s not the case,” said Sawyer.
