(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — This week’s difference maker is Anderson Humane in South Elgin, which makes an impact by caring for lost and abandoned pets.
"We will adopt out well over 4,000 dogs, cats, and small animals and birds this year,” said Dean Daubert, Anderson Humane’s director of operations. “Right now, we have over 500 animals for adoption. So, every pen and every kennel run and cat condo is full, full, full.”
Adoption isn’t the only focus of Anderson Humane, though. The organization also works to care for wild animals.
"[We have] a wildlife center that we take in over 3,000 orphaned and injured wildlife animals each year to rehabilitate them and get them released back into the wild," said Daubert.
Humans, too, can get a helping hand from Anderson Humane.
"We have a healing paws program that visits nursing homes with therapy dogs,” Daubert said. “We have a military veterans program in helping them with whatever their pet-related needs are. We also work with local agencies to assist them when they have people enter their programs for domestic violence or homelessness to help with pet-related needs.”
"The future of animal welfare is really in creating deep connections between people and animals," added Daubert.
