A federal judge has expanded a lawsuit filed by a woman who accuses the city of Chicago of illegally towing and selling her car.

Attorney Jacie Zolna represents the woman. He says the city classifies vehicles as abandoned if they are simply parked in the same spot on the street for seven consecutive days.

The city hasn’t followed its own rules of finding evidence that such vehicles were indeed abandoned, he said, and it hasn’t notified owners of plans to tow and potentially sell their vehicles.

Zolna says the city could have settled the lawsuit for $25,000 earlier this year and now could face much bigger liabilities because of its class-action status. That means potentially thousands of vehicle owners could join.

A federal judge rejected the city's request to dismiss the lawsuit.
