CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Champaign County Director of Toys For Tots is furious with himself after he says thieves stole a trailer full of toys.

The 6-by-12-foot trailer was filled with hundreds of toys and bikes stacked floor to ceiling and was sitting on Caesar Perez’s driveway.

He discovered that almost everything was stolen when he opened the trailer on Friday morning.

“I shamefully apologize for my stupidity," he wrote in a Facebook post. “I dropped my guard, I got lazy, and I failed.

He told CBS 3 in Champaign that he left the lock hanging open. Perez said he said he wants to make it right, but doesn’t know how to.

“These toys were stolen from the children that we’re supposed to help out every year."

Perez and the Salvation Army Director have different opinions about whether the thief or thieves should be prosecuted if caught, according to CBS 3.
