(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A study from Notre Dame shed light on what many independent voters were thinking before the midterm election earlier this month.

Researchers from the Rooney Center for the Study of American Democracy have released the results from a survey of voters, which they conduct before each midterm election.

The study found 54% of independent voters planned to vote for the Democrat candidate in their House Congressional district.

Feelings about President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump were the strongest predictors for voting intentions, the results showed. Other issues, such as cancel culture, critical race theory, or a person’s own financial situation did not factor as much for independent voters.

As for the 46% of independents who supported Republican candidates in their House district, researchers said those voters were more likely to believe the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

Researchers added that, compared to partisan voters, independents tended to be disproportionately young, male, single — never married — self-employed, and came from households that earned under $30,000.

Results from the study may be found here.
