(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two employees of a Westmont nursing home have been charged with criminal neglect resulting in the death of a resident.
A 96-year-old resident died after the bus driver allegedly failed to bring her inside Cordia Senior Living in February.
Prosecutors say Bert Mongrieg had driven the victim to the hospital, but upon their return to the nursing home, he left her in the bus and falsely logged her name in the resident logbook.
When employees noticed the woman was missing that night, they told the resident care manager, Navdeep Dhall. Dhall allegedly did not make an effort to find the nursing home resident.
The woman died of cold exposure in the bus after temperatures dipped to around 22 degrees that night. She was found the following morning.
Bond for Dhall and Mongrieg was set at $50,000 for each.
“Seniors at long-term care facilities rely on others for their personal safety and day-to-day needs. Today’s charges demonstrate my office’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of our most vulnerable,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.
