CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Technicians at the University of Chicago Medical Center performed a CT scan Wednesday on an unusual subject that was not human.

The tiny right arm and shoulder girdle of Sue the T-Rex underwent a CT scan-the first step for Field Museum researchers who want to determine the range of motion the arm had and the potential force that arm was able to handle.

Dr. Jingmai O’Connor said that in the past when she wanted to scan dinosaur bones, she had to drive to Urbana-Champaign to use an industrial scanner.

"The industrial scanner can take a whole day, 24 hours. Here, you can get the same scan in, like, 13 minutes so it’s awesome."

Dr. O’Connor expects to publish the results of her study in 2024.
