(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Leaders of a union representing many Jewel supermarket workers say raises they were promised in a new contract have been delayed for months.

Jeff Weiss of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents employees in Jewel's meat, seafood and deli departments, said the supermarket chain has not made good on pay raises that should have kicked in long ago.

Union members agreed to a three-year contract with Jewel Osco in December, he said.

Weiss said in some cases, workers have actually seen a cut in their pay rather than the increase they were promised.

It shouldn't be taking months to sort this out, he said.

Weiss said UFCW union leaders hope by raising the issue with the media, they won't have to file grievances or take other actions against Jewel Osco.

A spokesperson for the grocer issued a statement saying in part that the company is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
