CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It may not even be spring yet, but some high school students on Chicago’s Far South Side spent part of the Saturday harvesting lettuce.
in Altgeld Gardens near 130th Street and I-94, one of the nation’s first public housing developments, a group of young farmers was present.
They cut a ribbon celebrating their harvest from a vertical garden inside a shipping container. The kids are working with the By The Hand Club For Kids.
Andrea Yousfi is the Chief of partnerships and development.

"It is absolutely incredible. It's one of those things you have to see to believe," she said.
Yousfi also said said the group has grown at least one ton of produce in just six weeks and that they have grown over 2,000 heads of lettuce that will be distributed to the community.
Shania Picket is one of the young farmers.
"I learned entreneuership. I learned how to work in a group. I leared how to work on a farm," she told WBBM.
The lettuce grows on one side of the orange shipping container and there are LED grow lights on the other side.
