CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The University of Chicago Medical Center is reviewing and tightening security after a brawl erupted in its emergency room on Sunday night.

There had been multiple shootings in Washington Park, a block away from the hospital.

A crowd gathered on Maryland Avenue while wounded patients were being taken inside, according to an internal email.

At 8:20 p.m., it said, a group of 15-20 people entered the waiting room and moved into patient treatment areas where fighting broke out.

Three workers reported injuries. The email said security and police removed the entire group by 8:22 p.m., less than two minutes later.

There was no shooting and no weapons were found.  Patient care continued.

“We have already identified immediate areas of improvement to ensure our clinical teams can safely, securely and efficiently provide patient care,” wrote Krista Curell, executive vice president and chief operating officer. “We are also reviewing other security measures that will work in tandem with our new weapons detection system, which was installed last week.”
