CHAMPAIGN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Fire broke out last night at Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Illinois.
The fire started in the maintenance area under the stadium. Workers reported hearing a loud boom and then saw black smoke. When firefighters arrived, the amount of smoke prompted them to call an extra alarm.
Randy Smith, with the department, told CBS-3 in Champaign, the source of the fire was likely a maintenance vehicle and the boom was probably a tire.
“Sometimes what a tire does…They burn, they sometimes pop. We’re still looking at some other things,” Smith said.
The fire was confined to a small area.
One firefighter had an injury described as minor.
