(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Family Bereavement Leave Act is expanding unpaid leave rights for employees across the state of Illinois.

The Act is an amendment to the Child Bereavement Leave Act and goes into effect January 1st, 2023.

It expands leave time requirements to cover events and diagnoses that negatively  impact pregnancy or fertility, including pregnancy loss, failed adoptions, and unsuccessful reproductive procedures, among others.

It also requires employers to provide leave time after the loss of family members not previously covered...including spouses, domestic partners, and siblings.

Employees may take up to two weeks of unpaid leave time for any events covered by the Act.
