Warmer temperatures impacting ice fishing

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The area’s unseasonably warm winter weather is sinking the hopes of some local ice fishing enthusiasts and tour guides.

“It’s had a big impact on ice fishing for sure this year.”

Doug Kloet is the owner of Captain Doug Kloet’s Guide Service, and specializes in fishing the Illinois and Wisconsin waters.

“It’s been tough,” he said. “I’ve postponed trips. I’ve thought ‘okay, maybe a week or two down the road, I’ll be able to get out.’ But now, of course, we have a warm up again.”

And that inconsistency in temperature is what Kloet said is crushing the ice fishing season, which is typically in full swing this time of year.

“We definitely don’t get the winters that we did even 30 years ago.”

Instead, he and others are turning to alternative ways to fish.

“It’s almost like you need to think past ice fishing and get back into the boat.”
