(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Wauconda police accused a local man of driving dangerously through a crowded street Saturday morning — while a children’s triathlon was taking place on the roadway.

It happened shortly after 8:30 a.m., as the annual Children’s Triathlon was taking place in Wauconda. Police said that’s when Jack Hazen, of Wauconda, drove his custom, 2008 Ford Mustang GT through police barricades and onto Garland Road.

Despite the presence of a marked squad car with its lights activated, as well as a uniformed police officer yelling for him to stop, Hazen was accused of “slaloming between traffic cones at a high rate of speed” along Garland Road.

Police said that children were actively participating in the triathlon on Garland Road as Hazen was driving on the roadway.

The triathlon was for kids between the ages of 7 and 15 years old.

Wauconda police eventually stopped Hazen at Garland Road and Winding Lane, and officials said they took him into custody “without incident.”

No injuries were reported.

Hazen was charged with one misdemeanor and one felony, and the Wauconda Police Department seized his Mustang.
