CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago Aldermen have given preliminary approval for a tax incentive to help a Humboldt Park grocery store move into the site of an abandoned drug store.

CVS abandoned the building at 3552 W Grand more than a decade ago. Central Park Foods has been in Humboldt Park just across the street for 35 years. The grocer wanted to expand, and the City Council’s Economic Development Committee easily approved a tax incentive to help.

West Side Ald. Walter Burnett Jr. said the expanded store will fill a gap in that community.

“For those of us that have wards around this property, this property has been vacant for a longtime, is in a pocket of a community where there’s a lot going on, that needs some positive traffic in that neighborhood,” Burnett said.

If the Full City Council follows the lead of the Economic Development Committee, Central Park Foods will expand

The family that owns Central Park Foods has more than ten grocery stores in Chicagoland.

Alderman Tom Tunney was concerned that the company has no guarantees after the incentive expires in about a decade. But approval was unanimous.
