(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Members of the White Sox Volunteer Corps and City Year Chicago came to paint, build and clean Bright Star Community Outreach which operates out of a former School at 45th Street and Evans Avenue.
Former Sox Slugger Ron Kittle, now a team ambassador, among them.
“I'm here to make their thunder louder. That's been my job since they started this project, Volunteer Corps. I mean, it's just a great group of people getting together, doing the fundamental things and doing it right,”
Bright Star CEO Pastor Chris Harris was a student at the school when he was a kid.
“I'm just grateful that the place that I wreaked so much havoc in, I'm able to now bring hope and healing to other folks in our neighborhood.”
Harris said walking through the halls brings back so many memories.
Every single day I walk in here I get hit with memories, especially when I walk past the principal's office. That's where I used to spend a lot of my time,” Harris said.
The Corps is celebrating 15 years of serving the Chicago area. In that time, volunteers have served more than 62,500 hours at more than 680 community events.
