Hundreds of Will County property tax delinquency notices arrive 2 months late

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of Will County residents got some news this month that caused big concerns over whether they would lose their homes.

Will County Treasurer Tim Brophy said the U.S. Postal Service delivered hundreds of notices to people behind on their property taxes warning they could lose their property at a tax sale if they don’t pay their bills.

Problem is, according to the Daily Southtown, the notices came about a month late. The tax sale, which involved 3,100 properties, was held Dec. 9. About 400 people received late notices.

Brophy said many had already paid their bills by then, and none of those who were still delinquent had lost their property in the sale.

Brophy said the county had sent the notices, via registered mail, Nov. 10. In all, the treasurer’s office delivered 8,184 notices to the Joliet post office that day to be sent via registered mail at a cost of $24,470. The notices should have been delivered within days, Brophy said, yet they sat in the Joliet post office for weeks before being delivered.

Brophy said he contacted the Joliet post office and received a a “generic note” from the postmaster regarding the delayed notices.

Homeowners who receive a notice in the mail are encouraged to contact the Will County treasurer’s office at 815-740-4675 or visit www.willcountytreasurer.com. Homeowners can also check the status of their property tax bill payments on the treasurer’s website.
