Winnebago County Coroner: No connection to multiples bodies found

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The coroner in Winnebago County said he doesn’t believe there’s a connection after the discovery of multiple bodies over several weeks; but he said it is unusual.

Over the past six weeks, five bodies - mostly skeletal - have been found relatively close together. One body was found by a hiker and another was found by someone riding an ATV.

Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz told CBS 23 in Rockford that in a typical year, two or three sets of skeletal human remains are found, and what’s unusual now is that they were found so close together.

"I don't really have a rhyme or reason why they were found now within a month and a half versus spread out throughout the year, but I do not have any proof at all that these are related or that any individual is doing this to these people," he said.

They could be suicides, drug overdoses, or something else.

One body has been identified as that of a man who disappeared in Mendota in October. Others have been described as skeletal.

The coroner's office is working to identify the other bodies, and bring closure to the families.
