GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A woman from unincorporated Glen Ellyn is facing 33 counts of animal cruelty.

One count for each of the 33 dogs found on the Mildred Avenue property of 60-year-old April Elliott.

DuPage County Animal Services responded to a complaint from a neighbor last week.

They found dogs and other animals in cages stacked in her home in inhumane conditions, according to court documents.

Nine dogs were dead, along with four chinchillas and one rabbit.

They expect to find more once junk is cleared away. The Daily Herald reports, according to an affidavit for a search warrant, Elliott told officers she was testing and curing diseases on the animals.

She disagreed the conditions were inhumane.

She said they did not need veterinary care, and she "does not believe in government or Western medicine."

There are 99 other misdemeanor counts related to a lack of food, water and veterinary care.
