DES PLAINES, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Des Plaines police said a would-be burglar tried to gain entry to a home on Monday night by telling the homeowner her house was on fire.
The man had forced open a storm door in a home on the 1400 block of Prospect Avenue and police said he was in the process of opening the front door when the homeowner, an 87-year-old woman, appeared.
Whether it was quick-thinking on the man’s part police aren’t sure, but he told the woman her house was on fire and grabbed her arm.
She told him there were security cameras and he let go of her arm and fled to a waiting car that sped away.
Police did not say whether there really were cameras.
