GOLDEN’S BRIDGE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – Two friends are dead after a rowboat they were fishing on capsized in a Westchester reservoir about 50 miles north of New York City, police said.
Another fisherman found the capsized boat and one body in the Muscoot Reservoir around 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to state police.
Police later found the body of the second man.
The two men were identified as 48-year-old Ngan Kong from Brooklyn and 47-year-old Ma Weitau from Staten Island.
State police say the men went out fishing Monday afternoon and called their family in the evening to say they were staying longer, despite the inclement weather. At some point their 12-foot aluminim boat overturned.
Police believe the weather may have had something to do with their deaths, although the investigation is still ongoing.
The water temperature Tuesday morning was a chilly 38 degrees, according to police, who said it appears the men were swimming back to shore.
"It was raining heavy in Westchester County into the evening," State Police Capt. David Atkins said. "We do know that by 5 o'clock, it's pretty much dusk at that point."
An autopsy will be performed to determine if they died from drowning, hypothermia or some other way.
