NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York City restaurateur Keith McNally mocked his native country Monday for being the "worst tippers."
The 71-year-old British-born famed Balthazar owner posted a photo of the British flag Monday to Instagram, writing, "ASHAMED TO BE ENGLISH."
"I Wonder Why English People Are Generally The WORST TIPPERS in N.Y. Restaurants?," he added. "Especially if they're middle or upper class."
"This is not a complaint, just a fact," McNally said. "(Even the Scots generally tip better than the English in NY restaurants)."
More than 1,700 people have since liked McNally's post, with a top comment saying, "It’s because we expect to tip as appreciation for exceptional service and not to subside low wages."
Another said, "Tipping in the US is just out of control. Why not paying better base salaries instead of letting that been done by the customer? I dont get it."
In October, McNally, the owner of Pastis, Minetta Tavern, and Morandi restaurants, made headlines when he barred 44-year-old late-night host James Corden from Balthazar for being "the most abusive customer" to his "servers since the restaurant opened 25 years ago."
Corden first denied the ban to the New York Times, adding that he hadn't "done anything wrong, on any level," then fessed up to making a "rude" comment to wait staff, which he said he "deeply regretted."
