NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Dogs were found—alive and dead—under “extreme” hoarding conditions at an older man’s Long Island townhouse, officials said.
Workers in hazmat suits were throwing out items Wednesday from the corner townhouse on Maya Circle at the Islip Landing condos in Central Islip, where a foul smell was noticeable even outside on the sidewalk.
According to Central Islip Fire Chief Joseph Vereline, two dead dogs were found Tuesday inside the home, along with five more dogs living in “extreme hoarding conditions.”
Vereline said the smell of “feces and ammonia” permeated the residence and was so bad that oxygen levels were a concern for fire personnel.
“The neighbors complained about the smell and hadn’t seen the neighbor in a few days,” Vereline said. “The ambulance went in, discovered the male and the animals in the house.”
The man was removed from the home and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The five living dogs were taken to a local animal shelter.
No charges have been filed in the case as the Suffolk County SPCA investigates.
The home was condemned by the Town of Islip.
