Over 50,000 participants racing across the boroughs in the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — On your marks, get set, go! The famed TCS New York City marathon kicked off Sunday morning as tens of thousands of participants began making their way across the 26.2 mile course through the five boroughs.

Professional men's race winner: Abdi Nageeye

Abdi Nageeye, of the Netherlands, won the professional men's race with a time of 2:07:39.

Nageeye was a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics and beat out defending champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia after pulling ahead in the final mile.

Professional women's race winner: Sheila Chepkirui

Sheila Chepkirui, of Kenya, finished first in the professional women's race with a time of 2:24:35.

She narrowly defeated last year's winner Hellen Obiri, also of Kenya, who was attempting to defend her title.

Women’s wheelchair race winner: Susannah Scaroni

Susannah Scaroni, of the U.S., won the women’s wheelchair race in a time of 1:48:05. She previously won the race in 2022.

Scaroni was nearly 10 minutes ahead of the second-place competitor.

Men’s wheelchair race winner: Daniel Romanchuck

Daniel Romanchuk, of the U.S., won the men’s wheelchair race in a time of 1:36:31.

Romanchuk beat out David Weir and Tomoki Suzuki, and the winner of the last three years, Marcel Hug of Switzerland. Hug was going for his seventh win overall and fourth consecutive, but fell behind in the second half.

In 2023, the TCS New York Marathon had 51,402 finishers, the third most in the race’s history.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 marathon, including the route, street closures, race times and where to watch, all according to the marathon’s organizers.

THE ROUTE

The marathon route begins in Staten Island, heads up through Brooklyn and Queens, into Manhattan before a quick dip in the Bronx, and finally concludes in Central Park. See the full map below.

WHERE TO WATCH

Locally, the marathon will be broadcast on WABC-TV Channel 7 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with additional pre and post coverage. It will also be available to stream live on the ABC 7 New York app and abc7ny.com.

Nationally, ESPN2 will broadcast the race from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., while ESPN3 broadcasts pre and post coverage. It will also be available to stream on the ESPN app and espn.com.

Race organizers also highlighted the best in-person spectating locations along the route:

Spectators can view the finish line, located at 67th Street on West Drive, in two different ways.

Grandstand seating, which requires ticket purchase, will be at the finish line, while the standing spectating area (which does not provide seating or allow outside chairs) will be open inside Central Park from Columbus Circle to the south side of the grandstands. Entry may be restricted at time based on capacity.

Spectators can enter Broadway at West 61st Street or West 62nd Street, or from the east side by following the Central Park path by Heckscher Fields. Screenings will be mandatory at all entrances.
