Luka Dončić’s debut for the Los Angeles Lakers was quieter than expected, as he finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 105-98 win. While Dončić struggled with his shooting, going just 5-of-16 from the field, he still made an impact with his ball-handling and playmaking. Adjusting to a new system alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Dončić showed flashes of his usual brilliance but couldn’t quite take over the game as he often did in Dallas. Lakers fans gave him a warm welcome, and despite the modest numbers, his presence alone helped open up opportunities for his teammates.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks are facing an early setback as Anthony Davis—who was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Dončić to L.A.—has landed on the injury list. Dealing with a lingering knee issue, Davis was expected to be the centerpiece of Dallas’ frontcourt alongside Kyrie Irving, but his debut for the Mavs will have to wait. With Davis sidelined indefinitely, Dallas will need to rely on its depth to stay competitive in a loaded Western Conference. The team’s playoff hopes now hinge on how quickly they can adjust without their newly acquired star. Irving will replace Davis in the 2025 NBA All-Star game.
