The Cowboys have shed further light on their recent parting of ways with former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
Speaking with reporters on Wednesday from college football's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, team CEO Stephen Jones confirmed that head coach Mike McCarthy and Moore had "philosophical differences."
Moore, 34, was promoted to Cowboys offensive coordinator in 2019 -- one year prior to the arrival of McCarthy as head coach. Moore spent 2018 as the team's quarterbacks coach.
A former quarterback with the Lions and Cowboys, Moore has now joined the Los Angeles Chargers, where he will serve as offensive coordinator to head coach Brandon Staley.
The Cowboys' offense largely enjoyed great success during Moore's tenure, but the unit took a significant step back in 2022. Star quarterback Dak Prescott in particular seemed to struggle, throwing a career-high 15 interceptions in 12 games, most in the league.
The play-calling came under particularly scrutiny after the team's season-ending loss against the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round Playoffs. On the Cowboys' ill-fated final play, running back Ezekiel Elliott lined up at center and got bulldozed by an oncoming pass-rusher after snapping the ball to Prescott.
Also on Wednesday, the Cowboys confirmed McCarthy would assume play-calling duties in 2023. The longtime head coach also handled that responsibility during his time with the Green Bay Packers.
