ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Cardinals-Cubs game Thursday night was nothing short of a feisty affair. While the team got blown out by the Cubs 10-3, temper flared just shortly after first pitch began.
John Rooney, voice of the Cardinals, joined Joe Pot on the KMOX Friday morning sports chat to discuss the events surrounding Thursday's game, with Rooney still disagreeing with how the situation was handled.
"I don't think it was handled very well and I still don't," Rooney said, "I don't know if the umpires saw a situation. A warning should've been given after the inside pitch that did not hit Happ. The idea is to keep players on the field. I know the umpires have a job to keep things settled on the field and keep things control, but if that is by rule that they think a pitcher is throwing at someone, I think a warning has to be issued."
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ accidently hit St. Louis catcher Willson Contreras with a long follow-through on a swing, then was soon hit himself by a pitch from Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas.
Mikolas and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol were ejected in the first-inning dustup between the longtime rivals.
The Cardinals say Contreras had a scalp laceration and was day to day to return to the lineup. Luckily Contreras did not need stitches to close the wound.
