PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He was brought in to replace Jacob Stallings and help mentor the young pitchers. Don't look for catcher Roberto Perez playing for a long time.

The veteran hurt his hamstring on the bases on Saturday and the Bucs are calling it 'long term' placing him on the 60-day injured list.

"They are a lot like obliques, you use them in every part of life," said Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk of hamstring injuries.  "From walking, to getting out of the car, getting out of bed.  Where we can continue to learn, sometimes we take it too fast."

Add in the fact he's a catcher, by far the most physical position on a baseball diamond.  He's also 33-years-old and played 1,209 professional games behind the plate.

"The getting up and down from that grouch position," Tomczyk said.  "The maneuvers of what that hamstring does, in general catchers probably take a little longer with hamstrings."

OF-Jake Marisnick

He will need surgery on his left thumb in the next few days and they will provide more details after the procedure (anywhere from weeks to potentially a month or longer).  Marisnick injured on Monday as the glove rolled under his hand making a diving catch.  While it's his non-throwing hand, Tomczyk points out it's a key part of swinging the bat.

INF-Kevin Newman

Projected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week recovering from a groin injury.  Newman is currently taking infield practice and running bases.

RHP-Quinn Priester

The Bucs 2019 first-round pick is throwing pain-free on flat ground and off the mound.  The oblique injury is healing well, but Tomczyk says the Pirates are working on his delivery to help prevent injuries in the future.  A key to the Bucs future rotation is changing up his delivery with no timetable for his return.  The 21-year-old has yet to pitch in a game this year.

CF-Travis Swaggerty

Bucs submitted paperwork for the 2018 number one pick and centerfielder to return from a concussion.  Swaggerty missed all but 12 games last season with a shoulder injury.  The lefty-hitter had played in 17 games this year in AAA hitting .194 with a double, a home run, seven RBI and a .286 OBP.

OF-Greg Allen

He transitioned his rehab from a hamstring injury down to Florida and continues on his progression and is eligible to return from the IL in early June.
