Is Canada still employed because of relationship with Tomlin?

The calls for the Steelers to fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada continue to grow with each Steelers loss.

NFL Insiders including Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger are calling the Steelers offensive scheme worse than a high school offense and Dan Orlovsky saying he can’t see the Steelers having more than 10 plays they can run on offense.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said “I don’t feel like I’m there” when asked on Tuesday during his weekly press conference if he was ready to make changes to the offense.

That would include replacing Canada, who continues to hold on to his job, despite criticism from inside and outside the Steelers headquarters to replace him.

Andrew Fillipponi on The PM Team pointed out again that Canada was the interim head coach at Maryland in 2018 and his first recruit was Tomlin’s three-star wide receiver son, Dino Tomlin out of Shady Side Academy.

Maryland was struggling badly at the time to get any recruits. Former coach D.J. Durkin was suspended, then reinstated and then fired a day after. This came after an investigation following a player dying from heatstroke during a spring workout.

“They’re team has zero recruits that year,” said Fillipponi. “And no one wanted to touch that program at all and Canada took Dino Tomlin in So, I’m forced to bring stuff up like that and connect dots like that when someone is so underqualified for their job.”

It should be noted this is pure speculation from Poni who is trying to find a reason for Tomlin and the Steelers to employ Canada.

It’s the latest offensive coordinator to fall flat in Pittsburgh and a coordinator who may have been hired due to nepotism.

Former offensive coordinator Todd Haley was fired and replaced with Randy Fichtner, who was likely hired because of his good relationship with Ben Roethlisberger.

Now, Canada, who’s had one decent season in college football and no experience in the NFL until a couple seasons ago, is in charge of the Steelers offense.

Again, it’s pure speculation that Canada still has his job because he’s chummy with Tomlin.
Canada could still be employed because Tomlin doesn’t want to admit he’s made a mistake.

But when it comes to offensive coordinators, he’s 0 for his last 2.
