WATERBURY, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Tens of thousands of Greater Waterbury residents wake up with little or no water Saturday morning.

While crews were working overnight to repair a smaller water main break on Thomaston Avenue from earlier in the week, a major high-pressure water line broke.

That line connects much of Waterbury and also Wolcott, Watertown, and Prospect.

Mayor Paul Pernerewski, who arrived at the scene over night, said they're able to shift water flow with the temporary repair done at Huntington Avenue, where an earlier break occurred at the end of the summer.

The extent of the damage from the larger main break is unknown at this time. There's no estimate for either a temporary or full restoration. The city is waiting until the pipes drain more, and debris has to be cleared from the break site near Thomaston Avenue to assess damage.

A boil water advisory is in effect until further notice for those who have, or get, water.
