A man who had served on the board that oversees all South Carolina highways is now on a fast track to jail, after violating his probation just hours after being sentenced for a previous crime.

Prosecutors announced on Wednesday that 72-year-old John Hardee will now serve seven months behind bars.

The sentence stems from an incident that occurred back in August. At that time, Hardee had been sentenced to no jail time for trying to destroy evidence in an FBI investigation that was looking into whether or not he accepted bribes while serving on the South Carolina Department of Transportation board.

Just hours after that sentencing, Hardee was arrested for trying to hire a prostitute.

Hardee has asked for mercy in the case, and a psychiatrist testified that he has a mild form of dementia, but prosecutors said his lack of regard for the law warranted the seven months in jail.
