GCS First Day of School

First Day of School and Mobile Art Cart at Fountain Inn Elementary - Emily Gill

Today marks the first day of school for Greenville County Schools.

They have started the school year on Attendance Plan 1, which has students in school for one day per week based on their color groups which were divided by the first letter of the child's last name.

Kimberly Rexroad, an Elementary Music teacher, at Fountain Inn Elementary, expressed her excitement for the start of the school year.

"I was really excited you know coming from eLearning where you're not really interacting with the kids as much so to be able to come in and make music with the kids in person has been really exciting.  I'm just overjoyed to be back."

Rexroad said that while there are changes because of coronavirus, there are new ways they are finding to encourage the students and welcome them to school.

"For me since I see every student, I'm trying to find ways to reach every student even though they are not all going to be in the school building at the time I teach their class.  In the classroom, I'm doing a lot of instrument activities, but online we're able to sing; we're not able to sing in the classroom because of coronavirus guidelines. It's been cool to come up with different ways to reach each kid in the school and develop eLearning lessons as well as in-person lessons."

Rexroad and a few other teachers at Fountain Inn Elementary are "traveling teachers" for now, as part of the changes with COVID-19.

These teachers have put together carts that they take with them to the different classrooms when it is time for their lesson, as opposed to the children switching to a different room for that class.

Other precautions have been taken as well; desks are spaced as far apart as possible and each child has their own table or desk.
