The South Carolina Department of Public Safety and their law enforcement partners' Sober of Slammer! campaign has begun and will run through the start of the year.
"Drink, Drive, Die" is the message law enforcement wants to get across with the campaign.
The campaign is designed to educate the public while also cracking down on and discouraging impaired driving.
"We can take people to jail, we can make arrests, we can write tickets. But ultimately, it's for the person who's getting behind the wheel of the car to do things responsibly," said South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Corporal Joe Hovis. "We're not saying don't drink. We're just saying don't drink and get behind the wheel of a car because it only takes a second to change your life or somebody else's life forever."
Hovis says the dui and dwi penalties are severe and can include large fines and up to 25 years of jail time.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety says that an average of 300 people die in South Carolina every year because of impaired driving.
