An eighth grade student at Bryson Middle School was arrested for possessing weapons on campus. The student had an unloaded gun and a knife inside a string backpack that he placed in an outdoor trashcan. Other students discovered the bag and threw it on the roof as a safety precaution. The students immediately informed an administrator and the school went into lockdown.
The school resource officer was able to secure the weapons and take the student into custody without incident. At this point in the investigation it does not appear that the student made any threats. The student who brought the weapons will be suspended and recommended for expulsion. Federal law requires a mandatory 12 month expulsion any time a firearm is brought on school property. The school system commends the students who witnessed a suspicious act and quickly informed an adult.
Simpsonville Police are handling the investigation.
