A former Greenville County deputy is facing multiple charges, including criminal sexual conduct.
According to a release from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, an improper conduct complaint was made against 34-year-old Christopher Abercrombie on October 29, 2020. The release further states the GCSO Office of Professional Standards started an internal investigation and Abercrombie was terminated for Conduct Unbecoming on October 30, 2020.
A separate release from SLED said their investigation found that while on duty and armed with a handgun, Abercrombie "forcibly confined an individual and engaged in sexual battery."
The SLED release said Abercrombie was charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree, Kidnapping, Burglary First Degree, Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime, and Misconduct in Office; he was booked into the Greenville County Detention Center on February 19.
The case will be prosecuted by the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
In the GCSO release, Sheriff Hobart Lewis said, “Like any complaint involving misconduct against an employee at the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office we investigated it to the fullest extent to ensure the integrity and public trust is upheld by the deputy’s sworn to serve our community. In this case it was immediately made clear that Mr. Abercrombie broke the oath he swore to uphold and under no circumstances will behavior of utter disgrace be tolerated in my office.”
