At last night's meeting the Greenville County Council passed the second and final reading of what is known as the anti-camping ordinance.
The new statute would prohibits people from sleeping in public spaces for more than two hours. The man who spearheaded the ordinance is Councilman John Deworken.
He was a guest on the Charlie James Show days after the ordinance passed its first reading and explained how the idea came about.
Deworken said "Since Covid, we have had an uptick in homelessness in our community. I took a trip to San Diego a few years ago and I saw a city that literally has been ruined. So, I cam back to Greenville and have been working on it (the ordinance) since.
Violators could face up to 30 days in jail and a fine. The ordinance passed by the slimmest of margins, 4-3. Those who oppose the new statute claim the ordinance targets the homeless population of Greenville.
