(Greenville, SC) -- Debris removal from the Reedy River set to begin two years after Hurricane Helene.
A $1.4 million USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service grant will fund the removal of hard-to-reach debris between Falls Park and Mauldin Road. The city estimates crews will remove about 25,000 cubic yards of fallen trees and other vegetation from the river.
Ben Carroll, deputy director of Public Works for the City of Greenville, says the debris increases the risk of flooding during severe weather and heavy rain. Work is scheduled to begin Sept. 17 and is expected to take about five to six weeks. The city says some of the debris will be turned into mulch and used at city parks and buildings.
