A joint initiative was announced between the Laurens County Sheriff’s, DHEC, and the Laurens County School District to support students dealing with trauma.
The Handle with Care initiative was announced recently, a program that creates a pathway to inform schools when students have been exposed to a traumatic event.

“These children still have to go to their class, carry on with their day, so we’re hoping that school staff knowing something is going on with the child, not necessarily what it is, but knowing something’s going on will help them to approach that child in a gentler way, be aware of a behavior change,” said Laurens County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Courtney Snow.
She also continued that the added awareness will help the school intervene if the student’s education is negatively impacted so that they can get additional help if needed.
Snow said it was the school district who came to them about joining this initiative after DHEC made the district aware of the idea.
