A move has been made to further bringing a new baseball stadium to the Upstate. The plan for a new ballpark in downtown Spartanburg received a shot in the arm Monday, as the Spartanburg County Council voted to allocate over a million dollars per year to the project.
The new 3,500 seat stadium is set to be built on Daniel Morgan Avenue behind the AC Hotel. The city of Spartanburg will own the new ballpark and the Johnson Group will handled the development.
Earlier this year, the Texas Rangers announced they are moving their Kinston, NC based affiliate to the "Sparkle City" and the team will play at the new downtown stadium. The project is part of a larger development plan for the city's downtown area.
The new team could start playing in Spartanburg as early as 2025. That would mark the return of minor league baseball, after the Phillies had a minor league club there off-and-on from the early 1960's to the mid 1990's.
