Leaders in the State Juvenile Justice Department are meeting with legislators to address overcrowding issues. A Statehouse Committee is meeting Monday to review a request from the DJJ.

The request is for the DJJ to be able to rent Greenville County's Juvenile Detention Center to create more space. That facility was closed in 2022 due to staffing issues at the time. Currently, the DJJ says over 130 juvenile offenders are being housed at their Columbia facility.

Moving some of those juveniles to Greenville would free up space. If the request is approved the DJJ would pay Greenville County more than 3 million dollars to lease the facility for the next 5 years.
