A Jersey City, New Jersey man is trying to figure out what happened to his dog Mac, who died under mysterious circumstances this week after he was dropped off with a pet sitter.
Jersey City Police are now involved in the investigation of the Mini Goldendoodle’s death, NJ.com reported Friday.
It all started when Diego Chaves hired a woman named “Alyssa,” who he thought was a professional dog sitter, to look after Mac while he and his girlfriend were away.
“In the beginning, everything was great with the sitter. She sent us pictures, gave us updates,” Chaves told News 12.
But things “took a turn” on Monday, when Chaves said he tried to pick Mac up as planned but the sitter was nowhere to be found.
“Living a nightmare right now,” Chaves reportedly wrote on Instagram Monday. “If anyone has seen Mac or knows anything that could help find him or her please let me know.”
After posting to social media, Chaves said a lot of people reached out to him with concerning stories about the pet sitter.
Chaves said he didn’t hear from “Alyssa” for nearly 24 hours and then she emailed him, saying Mac had jumped out of her car near the Jersey City-Bayonne border, according to NJ.com.
“I went after him but he was too fast so then I got in the car to chase him and I couldn’t find him,” she reportedly wrote to Chaves, adding that she was “so upset with myself and embarrassed and ashamed.”
On Wednesday, Chaves wrote on social media that “Mac had unfortunately passed away” after he was brought to a veterinarian by someone.
“Please do not take this as a sign to harass or threaten the sitter,” Chaves wrote in the post.
While the circumstances around Mac’s death remain unclear, the Jersey City Police Department said it’s “actively investigating” the case, according to NJ.com.
Meanwhile, Chaves has started a GoFundMe to figure out “the events that led to the passing of our sweet boy, Mac, so we can ensure no one else has to go through this pain.”
