6 Biggest Moments From the 'This Is Us' Season 4 Finale

By Lizzy Buczak, Audacy

“This Is Us” utilized their love of many timelines to deliver a finale that was a mix of happy, heartbreaking, and illuminating storylines.

Fans were offered a resolution to many of the show’s pending questions including the biggest one of all: who is Kevin’s baby momma in the near-future?

The show also finally revealed what led to Randall and Kevin’s fallout that found Randall skipping the Big Three’s milestone 40th birthday celebration.

And, in true “This Is Us” fashion, there were a few cliffhangers that we’ll be thinking about until the season premiere in September.

Here are the biggest moments from the season 4 finale:

Who Is Pregnant?

A flash-forward earlier in the season to the Big Three’s 40th birthday revealed that Kevin has a "pregnant wife," but her identity remained a secret until the finale where it’s revealed that the mother of Kevin’s unborn child(ren) is Madison, Kate’s best friend, who he had a one-night stand with when they were both feeling sad and lonely. The revelation isn’t entirely surprising as we kind of saw it coming, but never underestimate the writers behind “This Is Us,” as they always have a few tricks up their sleeves. When Kevin tells Madison he’s “all in” for raising this child, she tells him its twins!

Now, before you jump for joy, the series never confirms that Madison is the pregnant wife that Kevin is talking about in the future. Many fans believe that the brief, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it inclusion of Kevin’s other one-night-stand, Cassidy, was a hint that she’s also pregnant. And let’s not forget the scene with Sophie seeing Kevin’s cologne ad and smiling fondly. At this rate, any of the women could be his future wife.

Randall and Kevin’s Explosive Fight

Randall and Kevin haven’t been seeing eye-to-eye about Rebecca’s treatment for weeks now, and it all boiled down to an explosive fight that fractured their relationship significantly. There’s no coming back from the hateful words that were exchanged.

Kevin wanted to honor his mother’s wishes by allowing her to make her own decisions about treatment. Meanwhile, Randall convinced his mother (using some questionable tactics) to go to St. Louis for a 9-month clinical trial. After Kevin learns the truth, he flips out on his brother for always needing to control the situation. Randall argues that he always had to take care of the family while Kevin abandoned them for his "stale" acting career. Kevin retorts that if that was the case, their father, Jack, would still be alive. Randall insinuates that Jack died ashamed of Kevin. Kevin offers up the final blow by telling Randall that the worst thing to ever happen to him in life was the day Randall was brought home from the hospital. Ouch.

The Future

A much-older and fragile Rebecca is lying in bed very ill and evidently nearing the end of her life. Nicky, Jack’s brother, is by her side. He’s wearing a wedding ring, which confused many fans. Some fans believe he’s finally found happiness while others think that maybe Rebecca’s memory is so far gone that she thinks Nicky is Jack, and he’s fulfilling the role to give her peace and happiness.

We also see Kevin and Randall, both older and grayer. There’s still a lingering trace of animosity between them, but as Kevin puts his arm around Randall, it seems that maybe they've finally buried the hatchet. Kevin’s twins, a boy and a girl, also run into the room and hug their dad.

Noticeably absent for this scene Kate, who some fans believe passed away already, and Miguel, who fans think either passed away or is somewhere in the other room since Rebecca doesn’t remember him as her husband anymore. We also don't see Madison.

I'm still not totally clear on the horse people? The doctor and his daughter? And?#ThisIsUs pic.twitter.com/QnQos69gQE

Who Is Sadie and the Doctor?

“This Is Us” has a tendency of introducing brand-new characters without explaining who they are or why they’re important. And that couldn’t be truer about the man with a horse and his daughter, Sadie.

A significant amount of time was spent on the father-daughter duo and it’s still unclear why as the man simply ended up being Madison’s obstetrician. Since he gave her some sound advice about telling the father (Kevin) about the pregnancy, many fans believe he’ll be a guiding force for Kevin and Madison much like Dr. K, the man who delivered Kate and Kevin nearly 40-years ago was for Jack and Rebecca. But why put so much emphasis on his past and his relationship with his daughter? Will they play a bigger role?

There’s always room for one more in this family. Kate and Toby consider having another baby in this moment, presented by @subaru_usa. pic.twitter.com/Fis9WzTYz5

Who Is Hailey?

In addition to the man, the horse, and Sadie, fans also met a woman named Hailey, who was working at a museum and turning own a date from her co-worker/best friend, Zach. It wasn’t immediately clear who she was until, in the present-day timeline, Kate and Toby openly discussed giving baby Jack Jr. a sibling.

While Kate initially hesitated at the idea because her first pregnancy was riddled with complications, Toby suggested adoption. It’s unclear which route they took, but we know they went through with expanding their family because Hailey runs to the hospital to meet her niece aka Jack Jr.’s newborn daughter.

And that's a wrap on Season 4! Thanks for joining us on this journey and being a part of this incredible family.

Stick around and get ready to meet a whole new family! The series premiere of @CouncilofDads starts right now on @NBC. pic.twitter.com/SbVMdcbHIA

Who Is Hope?

That brings us to Hope, Jack Jr.’s newborn daughter. We first met the adult-version of Jack Jr. during the season 4 premiere where he met his future wife at the diner, they started their life together, and found out they were expecting. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to witness so many generations of the Pearson clan in one heartwarming hour.
